Feng Shui: A Lesson in Living Better + Cleaner

“Love your home and it will love you back. This is good feng shui”
― Rodika Tchi
When I started out cleaning, I was young and very impatient. Cleaning was frustrating for many reasons but primarily because I would have to do it all over again in a day or two. I felt there had to be a better way and I was right. The practice of Feng Shui made cleaning a part of my life in a way that I was not expecting.
What is Feng Shui?
Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice of creating balance and harmony through the intentional placement of objects. Decluttering and reorganization are key to bringing the best energy to a space. These practices apply to the external and internal environment.
Feng Shui is translated to”wind and water”. In Chinese culture, wind and water represent balance and harmony. The art of Feng Shui is a life-long practice, it could take a lifetime to master this ancient art.
However, there are a few ways to easily practice good Feng Shui:
- Dust – Dust is very bad Feng Shui, it blocks good energy as well as your breathing is affected negatively. An easy way to keep dust down is to keep shoes off in the house and use an air purifier to keep dust and allergens down. Simple dusting once a week with a lint-free duster will also keep the air clear.
- Room Purpose + Lighting – Rooms have a purpose, the lighting should accommodate the purpose of each room. Work areas, kitchens, and bathrooms should have bright lighting with bedrooms, living and, dining rooms having bright and soft lighting. The lighting will encourage the activity the room is designed for.
- Walkways – Every space has defined pathways to enter or exit a room, these areas should be clear and free from clutter. The pathway should flow and work with the furniture rather than have obstructions.

Keep these three things in mind when considering cleaning a space. It’s a start, a small reward in the end, and not a chore. For more tips on Feng Shui visit: https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/simple-ways-to-use-feng-shui-in-your-home
